  1. 💡 1. Check Etsy search data

Use a keyword tool like eRank to look up the exact search term. Note monthly searches, competition and the 12-month trend graph.

  2. 💡 2. Find proof it sells

Search the term on Etsy. Look for 2–3 listings with the Bestseller badge or thousands of reviews, and save them as proof.

  3. 💡 3. Confirm the season

Check Google Trends over 5 years. A real seasonal item spikes the same months every year.

  4. 💡 4. Count the competition

Under about 20,000 Etsy results is a good start. Over 100,000 means you need a sharper angle (personalized, a niche, a better design).

  5. 💡 5. Check price room

Your price after Etsy fees (about 10–12%, or 22–28% with ads) should cover filament, printer time and your time. Try the Profit Calculator.

  6. 💡 6. Make it your own design

Since June 2025, Etsy only allows 3D printed items made from your own original design. Never resell other people's files or famous characters.

💡 Decision checklist — weigh these together, no single number decides:

  • ✓ Some real monthly searches (1,000+ is a healthy sign, but a small B2B niche can still be worth it)
  • ✓ Competition you can stand out in (~20,000 Etsy results is a rough guide, not a rule)
  • ✓ Recent reviews or a bestseller badge at your price — a hint of demand, not proof of current sales
  • ✓ A spike that repeats every year
  • ✓ Your own original design

💡 What to list each month

List 6–8 weeks before the peak, so your listing has time to show up in Etsy search.

Current signals (fall 2026)

  • Christmas searches on Etsy are much higher than last year. Personalized ornaments and keepsakes lead the season.
  • 2026 holiday looks: heirloom ornaments that come back every year, icy blue and frosty colors, glam hosting, unusual woodland themes and "Tropical Christmas".
  • Home decor styles to watch: Neo Deco (Art Deco shapes), FunHaus (playful bold decor), Extra Celestial (moons and stars), Throwback Kid (nostalgia).
  • What still sells in 3D print: personalized items, board game inserts, lithophane photo lamps, and tools for specific hobbies. Generic flexi dragons and phone stands have dropped to a few dollars.
  • "Keychain" is one of the top 20 Etsy searches. Personalized and niche keychains are a low-cost way to test a design.
